I was reading around wikipedia (because I'm a closet-nerd) and I found something that caught my attention...
there's this whole article about "Generation Y" people. I'm a Generation Y kid because I was either born/young child growing up in the early 90s. this article was saying that employers are worried about the mind-set of the Generation Y crowd because of the way we were treated during competitive events growing up.
I can remember playing REC league & AAU basketball as a kid and even if we didn't have a winning season, everyone still got a trophy. I can remember doing 4-H events & if even if I didn't win anything, I still got one of those "Participation" award things.
employers are basically saying that we've been babied our whole lives into thinking that everyone has a fair chance of succeeding and being recognized for nothing else than the fact that we "showed up". it makes me stop and think - am I a competitively geared person who feels the need to win everytime or can I just appreciate the fact that even though I lost, I still tried?
and that gets me thinking about the fairly-new program Upward - I've been to those games & I love the idea of the whole program: every kid gets playing time, kids are supported and encouraged no matter their range of ability or the outcome of the game. the idea behind that is great - it builds strong moral character & self-esteem. but how do you feed the desire of winning in that kind of setting? I realize winning isn't everything - but it has to be something or else it wouldn't be celebrated the way it is.
how do you teach someone to push harder and faster and to reach for more when they don't really have to do anything but their presence is still celebrated? where's the line between hurting a child emotionally and uplifting them towards greater things? I know this is something I'll have to figure out with Sidney - how do I teach her to do the best she can, be the best she can without making her think that if she doesn't reach her maximum potential, she's nothing? it's a tricky thought....
how will the children of Generation Y raise their children? what will our future leaders look like? how will we influence those around us as we step up and take control of the reins? and are we even ready for that kind of responsibility?
I honestly don't know.

another one bites the dust
a new day, a new etsy purchase :)
bought this to hang in my little girl's room & bought it in colors that her daddy will love - plus this is a good combination of child/adult art that I think she can treasure forever, no?
did anyone else hear...
about the jilted lover-boy who tried to re-claim the implants he bought for his girlfriend? yeah...some crazy dude tried to repossess hooters from his ex-woman! I think he ended up stabbing her like 6 different times (she was OK in th end). who does that?
I know that this was a serious crime, and someone could've gotten seriously hurt - but since no one did, I think that makes it semi-okay to joke a little about it.
what a dummy! of all the ways to get back at someone, I don't think stealing fake boobies is exactly the best road to take. but there is a happy ending to all of this......
the woman got new silicon implants(;

thursday is here! one more day closer to the weekend :) it's hard to be mad on thursdays, isn't it? you know friday is right around the corner!
my morning has been full of chaos already - I hate running late, even though I'm always running late. it's a disease without a cure, you know - tardiness. there should be a pill you take to make you run on time; maybe I should just set all my clocks ahead ten minutes, and then I'll always be ahead of the game, right? sounds good to me!
this is a random turn, but aren't relationships the most strange thing? I mean, you think about it; two people who have "feelings" for each other, promise to only have those "feelings" for that one person and not have any "feelings" for someone else. and they promise to stay that way forever. FOREVER. how is that possible? yes, I realize I'm an engaged woman sitting here saying it's damn near impossible to keep the feelings you have for one person for the rest of your life, but I'm only being reasonable here. what's the point in lying to yourself? you have to be honest with yourself, if you ever expect to be honest with someone else - duh.
the point I'm trying to make here is that love comes quickly for a lot of people - the "feelings" we have are spontaneous and often unexpected. love usually takes a person by suprise & comes at a time in our lives when we least expect it. so, who's to say that the opposite of that feeling doesn't happen the same way? how can we promise forever to each other when we have no guarantees? it's a very sticky situation.
what I tell myself, and what I tell Justin, is that there have been times over these last five years when I didn't know how I felt about him - I wasn't sure that I even still "loved" him at all. but I made up my mind a long time ago that I wasn't going to just give up on a relationship when things went wrong; and believe me, things have gone just about as fully wrong as they can go between two people. for about two years, all Justin and I did was fight - I honestly don't know how we stuck it out. every day was a constant battle of screaming and crying and feeling so bad. yet, we didn't give up. we worked at it - we were changing as people & growing up. sometimes we clashed, but it happens in relationships.
Justin & I started dating when we were kids - we had to transition into young adults together. now we're moving towards full-blown adulthood, but still together. our love has survived growing pains - and that's what helps me know that we actually have a shot at forever. I know already it's not going to be a picnic; we're going to hit more rough patches as we continue to grow as people. and I think a lot of people just let themselves outgrow each other; but we don't. as much as we fight, as much as we hurt each other - we refuse to let each other go.
I look forward to battling each day with him - I look forward to making it work. marriage is just a very fancy label for a different kind of relationship - marriage is meant to help you grow as a couple and as individuals. for us, marriage is just the next possible step. after that - who knows where we'll go? but I do know that wherever it is, we'll be going there together. forever.

changing my mind already
so, yeah, I've already changed my mind from yesterday to today about what I want to do on Fridays - confused yet? good.
I'm going to try and have a DELIGHT every day - there's too much amazing stuff out there for me to ignore, so I can't wait around for just one day a week.
every day I'm going to post up the DAY'S DELIGHT. stay with me people - I'm still trying to figure everything out, ok?
ok.
peace.

I think this might finally be it....
but after searching for many days for the "look and feel" of this blog, I think I've finally settled on the palette and layout. ahhh, it feels good. that was one thing that always killed me about blogging on myspace - I'd have my post all typed out, designed how I wanted & then when I went to post, it'd go all beserk & keep flashing 'ERROR! ERROR! ERROR!' like I'd done something horribly wrong. do you know how annoying that is to type out a post twice? it totally defeats the purpose & kills my mood...if you know what I mean. that's why I love blogger:) it's has the auto-save feature + a total bonus. and it has great widgets to add to my profile, should I choose to do so. I'm still exploring all those options!
basically what I'm trying to say here, is that I'm very excited and thankful to be here blogging - I hope that this is the beginning of a very fun and relaxing adventure; even when I'm posting about things that are driving me nuts, I'm also soothing my spirits at the same time. blogging truly is a wonderful thing - this is something I've come to learn over time. I think a lot of people are afraid to blog because they're so worried about what people will "say" or think - and no one wants to think that other people think they're dumb...it's just too confusing and heart-breaking. personally, I don't reach an "audience" - there's probably a very small handfull of people who I could call my readers (shout out to my girl cassie, she's always supporting the BLOG!)...and lord knows, I've had people try to put me in my place when I blog about something that they don't agree with - especially politics. so if you're nervous about blogging, then I say start small: blog about something you know and love, something totally safe; like say puppies or board games or romance novels. talk about the solar system or shoes or where to find the best deals on make-up products - whatever you choose to blog about, though, just remember this: blog for yourself. blog because it's something you want to do, because you have something to say. don't sit there, typing up certain things because you think it's what other people want to read. don't try to please your "audience"...just please yourself with your blog. be your own blogger.
there have been plenty of times when I have written things that people like and enjoy and respond to; and then again, I've gone months where I haven't heard anything but crickets from the cyber community. sometimes I write good stuff that gets a laugh - sometimes it's sad stuff to touch your soul - & sometimes it's totally useless stuff that even makes me sit here and scratch my head saying "what?" outloud to myself...I get it - I'm a totally random blogger! and that's the way I love it. blogging is supposed to be fun - and for me, I hope it always will be.

preview for friday...
I have been inspired by the wonderful blog of the Future Mrs. Baker & since my sweet lil valentine's day cards came in the mail today, I have decided to create the official
FRIDAY'S DELIGHT DAY
I am a full-time fanatic of etsy's many shops, and I'm almost 100% positive I could spend all my extra $$$ there on things I really don't need. I'm also into online boutiques for inexpensive shoes/jewelry and I try to post bulletins on myspace whenever I come accross some great sites. so from now on, each and every Friday, I will display a new "find" of mine from the week along with pictures and a description :)
and for all my "readers" out there, we can swap great online-finds & I can acquire some more reasons to spend my hard-earnt money on useless girly stuff that makes me smile! okay? look for the FRIDAY'S DELIGHT coming soon!!!
peace.
in the meantime, I'll leave you with this etsy find: GarterLady's shop on etsy, Rose Tree Garters, has over 400+ items for sale that are just to die for! they're moderately priced and have so many different designs to choose from, it's hard to pick just one! the ones below are some of my favorite
this is the authentic ruby slippers inspired garter set for $30
this is the yellow and black organza polka dot garter set for $23.00
and lastly, here is a simple but elegant red satin with black beaded lace garter for $20
bridechilla(:
so it's been a little while since I went over our wedding plans (never done it here, but it's been awhile on myspace) so: here goes.
we are getting married September 19th, 2009 at Roller's Chapel in Blackwater, VA in an intimate, outside-ceremony at dusk. we're still on the search for a pastor, although we've got it narrowed down to two different preachers. our colors are chocolate, pumpkin and green apple for an accent color (justin says brown, orange and green).
I've picked out my dress; it's different, I'll say that. I found an adorable veil, too - I didn't want anything too big or extravagant; I picked out a simple, short veil that reminds me of the 50s. I love it! we also picked out our bridesmaid dresses (and by "we" I mean me, cassie & dobby). their dress is at left (I'm not showing you mine!) only we ordered them in chocolate & they'll be wearing wraps with them. I do believe our entire wedding party is going to be deckedout in Chuck Taylors; it's kind of become a staple of mine & Justin's. ever since our senior prom, people ask about wearing Chucks with formal-wear so...I think we're going with the tradition for the wedding!!! I'm still on the lookout for Sidney's dress, although I've been warned to order her dress last as late as possible, since she'll be growing non-stop at this point. I'm trying to talk Justin into having the guys were brown tuxes, but he's worried they'll look like fancy turds...which I kind of understand, but we saw brown tuxes on display at the bridal show a few weekends back at meadowview and they looked nice, not at all like fancy turds. I think I've found the perfect wedding photographer; when I started looking at different photography vendors, my teeth almost fell out of my mouth - I had NO IDEA how expensive it is!!! and our wedding is relatively low-budget, so it's been a struggle to find someone professional but also affordable. by chance, I won a free 16x20 portrait from In a Mother's Eye photography and the lady helping me out there has been so great - I think it's almost a done deal that we'll be using them the day of our wedding. as far as catering is concerned, it's all going to depend. if we can afford it, I think we're going to go with Pratt's - but if we can't, then my wonderful mother-in-law-to-be has offered her culinary services (which I know happen to be delicious!)...so only time will tell. Justin & I are debating about where to have the reception. originally, we thought we'd have both the ceremony and reception at Roller's Chapel but certain restrictions are making us re-consider. we're thinking about just setting up our huge 20x40 tent in mom's front yard & having the reception there; that way, there won't be ANY restrictions on how much "fun" we can have :) but like I said, that's still a work in progress!

inside the reception tent because I just adore them & I think they look so pretty at night when it's nice and dark. for centerpieces, I'm thinking of doing this collage kind of thing with favorite pictures and quotes and flowers - plus maybe include some green apples and little mini-pumpkins; I'm not quite sure yet. for invitations and programs, I'm using my wonderful Momma who has been in charge of those tasks for several weddings & they always come out beautiful (plus it's a big money-saver, too!). for flowers, the wonderful Tara Jo Dillon of Made With Care is helping me out; I have no clue what flowers I will be using, but I will NOT be using tulips, gerber daisies, or callalilies - it might seem impossible to dislike flowers, but those three are on the very bottom of my flower-list. For favors, Justin & I are making copies of our favorite DVDs to hand out; I'm thinking about having caramel-apples as extra favors, too! The only big thing I haven't been able to tackle yet is the design of the ceremony itself; since we're having our wedding outside, we're having to make our altar from scratch & it's a huge task! I've been thinking about having a picket fence as the backdrop, or maybe haybales...I don't know! that will be my biggest obstacle to overcome in the next few months.

I've created our wedding site at www.mywedding.com/maryruthandjustin and it's a really sweet site; it's got a wedding blog on there, but I can't find enough to say about our wedding just yet since it's barely in the first few steps of planning. when I get something more concrete, I should be able to wedding-blog more frequently, I hope!
the next big thing Justin & I have to do is register somewhere - I've been trying to narrow things down as much as possible; I'd like to register at just one store to make it more convenient for everyone, but I don't see that happening. our game plan is to move in together in May; we're doing things kind of backwards but seeing as how we have Sidney already, I'm pretty sure that lets us break any traditional rules we're supposed to follow! so wedding planning is as wedding planning does...it's a crazy, busy, fun, exciting, stressful, wonderful, expensive, magical, fanciful time that I'm doing everything I can to enjoy - I refuse to turn into some bridezilla & be a total ass while planning this wedding. I'm excited. Justin's excited. and we can't wait until September 19th gets here! (oh, and in case you didn't already know, the 19th happens to be our anniversary; we'll be getting married exactly 6 years after we first started dating!!!)
peace (:
la musica
I don't know if it's true for most of the majority out there, but I tend to find that when I can't find the words to express my emotions, I can typically find a song that does it for me. when I was looking around for a good lyric or two to put at the top of my page here, I kept thinking of classic songs and lyrics I love - the stuff that sticks with you from the time you're a kid hearing the words for the first time all the way up until you're old and gray still humming the same tune...that's the kind of song I was looking for!
I ended up going with a line from Don Henley's "Dirty Laundry" - I think it's fitting for society, for the times, and for this blog. I'm sure a lot of people out there like that song for the beat and melody alone; they probably never even bother to stop and think about the lyrics. it's like that John Melloncamp song "Little Pink Houses" - most people think of it being this great song, which it totally is, but it's also incredibly angst-y towards American culture...and a lot of people just miss the whole point.
but still yet, isn't it nice that 100 people can listen to the exact same song and walk away with a 100 different interpretations? that's the beauty of music and art in general - it's just a stepping stone towards getting in touch with our emotions. it's a doorway allowing us to get some perspective in our lives; music is inspiring and uplifting but also very "crash and burn" in a way. we hear what we want from the music, even when it's not exactly what we want to hear. there are certain songs that I can listen to anytime of the day, anywhere in the world and I will have this immense reaction - it's all based on the feelings I had the first time I heard that song. here's a great example: I can't even remember where I was the first time I heard "Lonesome Dove" by Garth Brooks, but to this day when I hear that song, it makes my heart churn and I get all teary-eyed. it's not even that good of a song - I'd say most people have never even heard of it, but it meant something to me at some point in my life. and so even today, it has the resonating effect on me whenever I hear it.
or it's like the song "Hurt" by Christina Aguilera...I know, she's not the best performer out there, but she does have a pretty good set of lungs. but I can remember working at food country, where the same music was on repeat every day, and so we'd hear that song 20 times in one stinking day - well, every time she got to the lyrics "would you tell me I was wrong? would you help me understand? are you looking down upon me? are you proud of who I am?" I would start crying: it didn't matter if I had customers standing right there or not. it literally killed me - and then when I found out I was pregnant with Sidney, I heard that song sometime later, and it REALLY killed me - all I could think about was my papaw and how he wasn't there and how I'd give anything just to know what he'd think of me or what he'd think of Sidney. let's just say that when I hear that song coming on the radio, I turn the dial (unless I'm in one of those crazy depressed moods and then I blare the damn thing....)
my whole point of this post, is to "listen" to your music - literally. what is it saying to you? there's that famous quote: "when words fail, music speaks..." well, I don't know how famous it is, but I didn't have to google it to remember, so it must be pretty well-known. I could make a soundtrack to my life right now, five years ago, or since I've been born. there are certain songs that have bookmarked my life permanently - anytime I hear those songs, I'll remember a time in my life and how I felt. they say that smell is the most powerful sensory reminder we have; but I disagree. for me, it'll always be music.
below are some of the songs that have made me who I am today. of course you won't understand exactly where they fit in my life or why they mean something to me - but if you're interested I'll tell you the story...and we can swap musical memories (:
peace.
Only the Good Die Young - Billy Joel
Shook Me All Night Long - AC/DC
Walking on Sunshine - Katrina & the Waves
Letting Go - Suzy Bogguss
Twist and Shout - Mary Chapin Carpenter
C'est La Vie - B*witched
It's All Coming Back to Me Now - Celine Dion
.45 - Shinedown
Hotel California - Eagles
Bad Bad Leroy Brown - Jim Croce
Photograph - Nickelback
Shining Star - The Manhattans

I would start crying: it didn't matter if I had customers standing right there or not. it literally killed me - and then when I found out I was pregnant with Sidney, I heard that song sometime later, and it REALLY killed me - all I could think about was my papaw and how he wasn't there and how I'd give anything just to know what he'd think of me or what he'd think of Sidney. let's just say that when I hear that song coming on the radio, I turn the dial (unless I'm in one of those crazy depressed moods and then I blare the damn thing....)
my whole point of this post, is to "listen" to your music - literally. what is it saying to you? there's that famous quote: "when words fail, music speaks..." well, I don't know how famous it is, but I didn't have to google it to remember, so it must be pretty well-known. I could make a soundtrack to my life right now, five years ago, or since I've been born. there are certain songs that have bookmarked my life permanently - anytime I hear those songs, I'll remember a time in my life and how I felt. they say that smell is the most powerful sensory reminder we have; but I disagree. for me, it'll always be music.
below are some of the songs that have made me who I am today. of course you won't understand exactly where they fit in my life or why they mean something to me - but if you're interested I'll tell you the story...and we can swap musical memories (:
peace.

hollywood, hello.
I will be the first to admit that I'm a pretty regular follower of hollywood gossip; I suscribe to People weekly for pete's sake!! so it's safe to say I'm in the "know" of all these things celebrity-related (it's not my most proud feature, but hey, it has its charms)...
so it KILLS me, and I mean almost literally, when celebrity moms are complimenting each other and they keep saying, "oh, she's such a good mom. she's so hands-on...she chooses to be with her kids. she's very involved.." GIVE ME A BREAK. if you choose to reproduce, whether famous or not, it should be a total given that you are going to be HANDS-ON with your own children. since when is it a compliment that a mother is actually participating in her child's life? what kind of world do we live in? as a mother, it would kill me to think people were surprised at the fact that I am hands-on with my daughter - who says that? sometimes, I think I should just put the rag-tag magazines down and walk away...but then there's all those pictures of brangelina's 97 kids and I CAN'T STOP READING. :)
hollywood-living gives me an escape...some people follow college football or fantasy baseball or Guitar Hero games; me, I follow hollywood. I could tell you just about every major hook-up, break-up, knock-up kind of thing going on right now in the "biz". like I said, it's nothing to be extremely proud of, but it makes for good conversation and gossip sometimes...
I'm also extremely good at playing that whole 6 degrees thing - not neccessarily with Kevin Bacon, but I'm good at linking actors and movies and stuff like that. I love to play that celebrity name game thing cassie taught me whenever I'm on a road trip. so yeah, I'm kind of like my father in the fact that I'm a fountain of useless knowledge...
but if you ever need to know who John Mayer is smooching this week, or what drug Lindsay Lohan is trying out now - just call me, baby. I'll hook you up! (:
peace.
p.s. speaking of brangelina, I love this picture!

weekend warrior
the weekend is NEVER long enough - never!
yesterday, we all had a wonderful day full of looking at homeless dogs and homes on wheels :) for whatever reason, we felt like punishing ourselves & went to the animal shelter in kingsport; fell in love with a chocolate lab, but couldn't bring him home :( everytime I go there (and yes, lately, it's a lot) I just have the hugest tugging sensation at my heart - if I could bring every single one of those dogs and cats home, I totally would. I'll never understand animal cruelty. who can do that? who can be mean to a defenseless animal for no just reason? it's beyond me: I could never intentionally hurt an animal. it just breaks my heart.
then we all went out looking at double-wides; I'm pretty sure that's the route justin & I will end up taking as opposed to building. we found some we really liked (me, I found ONE I really like & have been rooting for all night and day!). that may be a really strange thing, but I LOVE going around looking at houses like that: it's my idea of the perfect date. is that weird? probably.
and so with a day of looking at things we can't bring home right now, and with a day of non-stop eating, I am prepared to go back to work tomorrow :( boo. I love my job, and I'm very VERY grateful for it, it's just that work sucks: period. I'd gladly accept winning the lottery and just quit work to play for the rest of my life....but then again, who wouldn't? ahh, it's wishful thinking/dreaming :)
enjoy another week at work - everyone will be working for the weekend!!! :)
peace.

the first voyage...
well, here's the first official blog on blogger! I for one am excited :) I'm hoping to transition from blogging on myspace to blogging here. we'll see how all that goes.
I don't have tons to say for this "historic" first blog. if you know anything about me, then you know my life is insane crazy right now: I'm pulling a full-time semester at MECC, I work full-time at a title company, I'm the full-time mother of the one and only Sidney Morgan (I call her SidMo), and I'm part-time planning a wedding for this September! life is officially chaotic - sometimes I can totally understand why B. Spears went all loco. if I had cameras following me around 24/7 while I tried to juggle all this stuff, I'd definitely find time to shave my head and marry a man-whore, too.
I'll try to be as coherent as possible with this blog, but I make no guarantees - and if I'm offensive sometimes, well then I guess that's just "ME". I'm in this weird place of holding onto my childish ways while still trying to grow up a little - it isn't always pretty. but it's the real story of a woman-child figuring out her life; and if you're interested in the woes of all that jazz, then welcome.
I hope you likey.
