You know it's going to be a good blog post when I'm talking about my husband's penis and its nothing to do with anything even remotely sexual. Like, at all.
Sidney has a peaked interest in anatomy lately. And I'm totally comfortable with being completely naked in front of her and always have been. Maybe it's because we're both girls, I don't really know. But when she's asked about something I've always been honest. I've never sugar-coated anything or given a body part some silly nickname. I'm just pretty blatant with her and I don't make a big deal ouf of her body-oriented questions.
Justin on the other hand is totally different. He refuses to be naked in front of her, which I understand. It might be different on a father/daughter level or something. I get it. And since she's never seen her father naked, she's never really asked any questions about it. But she's seen our boy puppies and she's been asking questions about them recently.
And she's put two and two together that boys have the same tools, whether human or dog. So she knows daddy's equipment is different than our girly equipment. (Side notes: She calls it "pe-nits" and she suprised me with the ball question on Archie the other night, as he was lying on his back letting her rub his belly and she was all 'what's these?' - I was put on the spot so I just said his ball and she said 'two balls' and there you go....)
I've told you all of this because the funniest little scene just happened about 10 minutes ago, I wish I would've had a camcorder handy. Justin was about to hop in the shower, a towel around his waist, and Sidney started saying, "where's Daddy's pe-nits? I wanna see 'em.." She then proceeded to chase him through the house trying to sneak a peak!
JUSTIN. FREAKED. OUT.
He now thinks I'm a pretty raunchy mom for teaching my kid a little bit about the birds and the bees at the tender age of two. But I think I'm just being real with her, paving the road to an honest and trustworthy relationship in the future. Hopefully this will cut down on any confusion she has about this obviously very tender subject as she gets older.
Maybe I'm wrong, maybe I shouldn't be so open with her. I don't know. It's just that she asks a question seriously and I feel there's no harm in answering her questions just as seriously back.
That being said Justin will probably never leave the bedroom without being fully dressed. And we'll be avoiding all conversations about the mysteries of life, the differences between a girl and a boy, and that all too horrifying conversation about the "S" word.

today is the day, or rather tomorrow is the day
Or should I say tonight at midnight is the day?
Whatever.
For all you Twilight loving individuals out there, you know that Eclipse comes out tonight at midnight. And yes, I'll be one of the millions of gals going out to the theater tonight - with my three best girlfriends and my boss.
Tomorrow will be painful at work, yes I know. But it will be worth it just to see the "tent scene" tonight. I fully expect to spend the next week talking and drooling over and fantasizing about Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner).
Because you know he's 18 now. And I can do that legally as much as I want to (ain't that right, Spoke?!)!!!
RAWR.

not sure why I felt compelled to tell you all this, but here it is
The summer between my 8th and 9th grades of high school, my family took a trip to Europe. And it was amazing - seriously one of the best vacations and most amazing experiences of my life. We went to London (England), Dublin (Ireland), Paris (France), and Edinbourgh (Scotland) among other little towns and spots along the way. We took planes, trains, automobiles and boats. We stayed in big hotels, little hotels and a bed-in-breakfast that was family owned and operated. We ate amazing food in every city, including *the* best meal of my life in a little cafe down from our hotel in Paris.
Right before we left for this amazing vacation Mom bought me my very first MP3 player; back when they first became popular. I felt like a million bucks. I imagined myself impressing all the European boys with my sleek little MP3 player and fancy glitter eyeshadow. Oh, how embarassing it was to be a teenaged girl!
So I tried to put all the music I had (illegally) downloaded from Ares onto my shiny new magical music box, but alas it is not in my nature to read instruction manuals, and I never quite figured it out. I trekked all over Europe with three wonderful songs on my MP3 player.
Kelly Osbourne - Papa Don't Preach
Incubus - I Miss You
12 Stones - Broken
I always look back on these songs and laugh. And smile. And feel a little like my younger self. It just goes to show how varied and crazy and different my tastes were...and still are. I still like all three of those songs. Every now and then I drag out my old Kelly Osbourne CD and crank it up. I lie awake in my bed sometimes in the dark when I'm home alone and sing Incubus in my head. I watch the video for 12 Stones a lot these days.
And really, I have no idea why I decided to tell you all about this. Other than the fact it's been on my mind, and before it leaves my mind again I wanted to get it all out there. That way ten years from now when I've forgotten my past and teenaged music preferences I can look back and remember what I liked.
And cringe a little at the thought of glitter eyeshadow.

if you hear this song and think of Napoleon Dynamite you obviously suck
Yesterday was my Dad's 46th birthday.
And while there's a multitude of songs out there that remind me of him (Santana's "Smooth" for example, seeing as how he used to sing the lyrics "or else forget about it" incorrectly as "horace forget about it"), this particular song by Bette Midler from the move also called "The Rose" makes me think of him everytime.
He used to say the words before she would sing them, all the while his right hand would be conducting the music in the air, making a dozen swirls in the front seat of whatever car he was driving at the time.
Happy Birthday Dad, I hope you had a wonderful one.
And because I can't find the picture of my Dad I'm searching for, here's a picture of one of his many gorgeous roses from last year.

falling in love with her, again and again
I always love my daughter, that goes without being said. But it's such a delight to fall in love with her over and over again.
There have been moments over the past (almost) three years where my heart swells with love and I feel as though it might burst in a matter of seconds. She'll say something or do something or look a certain way and it's almost too much.
Yesterday morning we were on the couch snuggling and cuddling and tickling and kissing - all the little things I love to do with her on the weekend mornings I can actually enjoy, instead of our usual running out the door with clothes and bags and toys flying out of every corner. We sat there together, lost in the precious early moments of the morning, and I couldn't help but feel that heart-swelling moment arise. I pushed her hair back off her face and smiled.
"Some day you'll be too big for this, you know? You won't want me to kiss all over you like this"
"You can kiss me, momma."
"You'll still let me do this when you're a big girl?"
"Sometimes. Just one more time."
And then it was hugs and kisses and smiles galore. She knows when I get a little weepy around her. She says "don't cry" and puts her head on my shoulder. She slays me, that kid of mine. She's so compassionate, so understanding. Even in the midst of her struggles with the dealing with her own emotions and the tantrums that arise from that confusion, she knows and feels the feelings of those around her. She doesn't like when Justin and I argue. She tells us "calm down" and "be quiet". You can't help but laugh when you see her acting like a little Dr. Phil.
She's endearing and sweet and I love her to pieces. It's hard to believe she'll be three in less than three months. Where has the time gone? Where has my little baby gone? How is it even possible that I'm still falling in love with her more and more so many days, weeks, months, years later?
Will it always be like this? Will I just continue to love her more and more over the years? I didn't think I was capable of such love, but here I am, lost in love with my child. Exactly where I want to be.
